MACS Mobile A/C Update 2020

Every year the Mobile Air Conditioning Society creates a special mobile A/C update clinic to help working technicians keep up with the rapidly changing mobile A/C service and repair industry. MACS manager of technician training, Steve Schaeber wants today’s technicians to,

“Spend a few hours investing in mobile A/C and engine cooling training that they can take home to their shops and put to work the next day to keep them efficient and profitable while offering customers reliable repairs.”

To achieve that goal, the training topics for MACS 2020 Mobile A/C Update clinics are:

  • Sometimes we think too hard
  • Manifold gauge pressures vs. line temperatures: The inexact science evolves
  • Fluorescent leak detection
  • A/C airflow switches to defrost
  • A/C performance in hot climates / engine temps
  • Software fix for HVAC Noise?
  • In-car and OAT (Ambient) temperature sensors
  • Electronics comes to the “thermostatic” expansion valve
  • A few A/C shorts
  • Update on refrigerant regulations, R-1234yf and Section 609 Certification

Electrical Functions in Air Conditioning

The electrical functions program covers the fundamentals of electricity as applied in automotive systems. Specific air conditioning electrical components are discussed in detail. Also covered are test instruments, electrical circuit operations and schematics, operation of A/C electrical components and battery/charging system testing. Completion of this program will prepare automotive technicians to approach some of the more difficult electrical challenges. Much of the material in this course is directly applicable to other electrically-operated vehicle systems.

Best Practices: Automotive Air Conditioning System Theory, Diagnosis, and Service Procedures

This course describes “Best Practices” service and repair methods pertaining to mobile A/C systems. Its “Boot Camp” style approach delivers “everything you need/nothing you don’t” in a fast-paced, highly informative manner.

Benefits of this A/C class includes helping to ensure:

  • More accurate diagnoses
  • High-quality long lasting repairs
  • Reduction of comebacks
  • Increased customer satisfaction.

Major subjects the course covers include:

  • A/C Systems: What They Do and How They Do It
  • A/C System Components: Description and Operation
  • A/C System Refrigerants and Oils
  • Essential A/C System Service Practices and Precautions
  • Mobile A/C System Temperature Testing

In this class, attendees will learn how to use temperature readings taken at various locations throughout an A/C system, to pinpoint problems. This in-depth program was developed by placing “bugs” in systems (both orifice tube and expansion valve) that simulate often-encountered real world situations. All “normal/good” and “abnormal/bugged” conditions were photographically documented. The “results” of the bugs, when matched up with the temperature readings taken, show how things like under/over charge, internal restrictions, blocked cabin air filters and condensers, and other improper conditions, affect A/C system performance and operation. Armed with the knowledge from this program, when confronted with similar circumstances in the field, technicians will have a good understanding concerning how to proceed with authoritative diagnosis and effective repair.
